モナシュ大学・Monash Japanese Education Hub（MJEH）の元所長であるアン・デクレッツァー（Anne De Kretser）氏が、このたび旭日双光章を受章されました。この喜ばしい出来事を日本財団、東京財団、及びNF-JLEPコミュニティの皆様と共有できることを大変うれしく思います。

伝達式は在メルボルンの古谷徳郎総領事公邸で執り行われました。この叙勲は、デクレッツァー氏が数十年にわたり日本語教育の発展とオーストラリア・日本間の相互理解の促進に積み重ねてきた功績が高く評価されたことを示すものです。

豪日関係50周年の節目に

今回の受章は、オーストラリアと日本が「友好協力基本条約」締結50周年を迎える年に実現したこともあり、特別な意義を持っています。

両国は半世紀にわたり、協力と友好に基づく関係を築いてきました。その歩みを支えてきたのは、政府間の交流だけでなく、民間における人と人とのつながりです。言語教育はそうしたつながりの土台となるものであり、デクレッツァー氏の活動は、両国の相互理解を深めるうえで大きな役割を果たしてきました。

豪日関係の重要な節目を迎える年に、両国の友好と相互理解の促進に生涯を捧げてきた教育者が顕彰されたことは、まさにこの条約の理念を体現する出来事といえるでしょう。

日本語教育の発展を支えた長年の取り組み

デクレッツァー氏は長年にわたり、日本語教育の発展と普及に尽力してきました。その活動はビクトリア州、南オーストラリア州、タスマニア州にとどまらず、オーストラリア全国の教育現場に大きな影響を与えています。

• 教員育成への貢献　デクレッツァー氏は革新的な教員研修プログラムの開発と実施を主導し、多くの日本語教師に研修機会や教育資源、継続的な専門的支援を提供してきました。
• 全国レベルでの提言活動　また、アジア理解や異文化理解教育の重要性を訴える中心的な存在として活動し、日本語が州および全国レベルの学校教育において重要な学習分野であり続けるよう尽力してきました。
• 教育コミュニティの形成　さらに、教育現場の枠を超えて日本語教育関係者を結び付けるネットワークづくりにも力を注ぎました。ビクトリア州、南オーストラリア州、タスマニア州の教員や関係者をつなぎ、日本語教育コミュニティの発展に大きく貢献しました。

日本財団による支援のもとで

こうした成果は、長年にわたる確かな支援によって支えられてきました。日本財団による基金支援と、東京財団をはじめとするパートナーの継続的な後押しは、センターが安定した環境のもとで創造的な活動を展開するための基盤となりました。

この長期的な支援があったからこそ、モナッシュ大学が日本語教育関連の新たな取り組みに挑戦し、活動の裾野を広げることができました。また、オーストラリアにおける日本語教育の持続的な発展を支える基盤づくりも可能となりました。

今回の日本政府による叙勲は、デクレッツァー氏個人のたゆまぬ尽力を称えるものであると同時に、日本語教育への継続的な支援が社会にもたらした成果を示すものでもあります。

Monash Japanese Education Hubは、デクレッツァー氏が築いた貴重な遺産を受け継ぎながら、次の50年に向けて豪日交流と日本語教育のさらなる発展に取り組んでいきます。このたびの受章を心からお祝いするとともに、今日に至る歩みを支えてくださった日本財団および東京財団の長年にわたるご支援に、あらためて深く感謝申し上げます。

Honouring a Legacy in Japanese Language Education: Anne De Kretser Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun

The Monash Japanese Education Hub (MJEH) is thrilled to share a momentous milestone with our esteemed partners at the Nippon Foundation and Tokyo Foundation.

Consul-General of Japan in Melbourne, Tokuro Furuya, officially presented the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, to Anne De Kretser, former director of the Monash Japanese Education Hub (formerly the Monash Japanese Language Education Centre). This prestigious imperial decoration recognises Anne’s extraordinary, decades-long commitment to advancing Japanese-language education and fostering mutual understanding between Australia and Japan.

A Timely Honour for a Historic Milestone

This prestigious recognition carries special significance as Australia and Japan celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation (the NARA Treaty). As both nations reflect on five decades of deep-rooted partnership, peace, and mutual prosperity, honouring an educator whose career embodies the very spirit of the treaty feels particularly fitting. Language education is the foundation of genuine cultural exchange, and Anne’s work has been instrumental in strengthening the people-to-people ties that underpin this vital bilateral relationship.

A Lifetime of Leadership and Impact

Throughout her distinguished tenure, Anne transformed Japanese language pedagogy across Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and national classrooms:

• Teacher Empowerment: She developed and led groundbreaking professional development programs, equipping many educators with resources and continuous support.
• National Advocacy: Anne served as a key advocate for Asian literacy, ensuring Japanese remained a vibrant, accessible pillar of school curricula at both state and national levels.
• Community & Culture: Beyond the classroom, she built strong bridges connecting teachers across Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania.

Grounded in Foundation Support

An achievement of this magnitude rests on strong foundations. The enduring endowment provided by the Nippon Foundation created the stable, creative environment necessary for the Centre to flourish.

This sustained belief in our mission enabled Anne and her team to innovate, expand outreach, and build a lasting infrastructure for Japanese-language studies in Australia. This recognition from the Government of Japan reflects not only Anne’s tireless dedication but also the real-world impact of generous support.

As the Monash Japanese Education Hub carries this legacy forward into the next half-century of Australia-Japan relations, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Nippon Foundation and Tokyo Foundation for being an integral part of this journey—and our warmest congratulations to Anne on this well-deserved honour!
