2026年1月8日、東京財団より、中林美恵子理事長を含む３名がオーストラリア・シドニーのマッコーリー大学を訪問しました。本訪問は、長年にわたる協力関係の節目となる意義深い機会となりました。当日は、副学長アンソニー・カハラン教授をはじめ、マッコーリー日本研究センター（MJS Centre）のチャワーリン・サウェッタナン准教授および国際学部の関係者の皆様に温かく迎えていただき、同センターの日本語教育への取り組みやこれまでの歩みについてお話を伺いました。

1995年に基金が設置されて以来、NF-JLEP事業はマッコーリー大学において、30年にわたり、152名を超える日本語教師および日本研究分野の研究者を支援してきました。その積み重ねは、オーストラリアにおける日本語教育の発展を支えるとともに、教育者同士のつながりや学びの広がりを生み出してきました。
今回の訪問では、これまでの歩みを振り返りながら、今後どのような連携が可能かについても意見交換を行いました。

訪問当日は、NF-JLEPの支援を受けたフェローとの懇談の時間も設けられました。出席者には、昨夏に来日されたベンジャミン・ギブ氏をはじめ、テリコ・シャリフ氏、ウィリアム・シンプソン氏、エイダン・ダンフィー＝スミス氏が参加されました。

参加者の多くは、シドニー近郊の高校などで日本語教育に携わる先生方です。支援を活用し、教材づくりや教科書開発、ワークショップの開催など、それぞれの現場に根ざした取り組みを進めてこられました。教室の内外で学習者を支え、日本語への関心や意欲を育むその姿勢は、大変印象的でした。
当日の交流を通じて、地域の日本語教育を支える教育者フェローの熱意や工夫、そして日々の努力に直接触れることができました。
今後に向けて
東京財団は、マッコーリー大学との長年にわたる協力関係に心より感謝し、本事業がオーストラリアにおける日本語教育の発展に着実に貢献してきたことを、大変心強く感じています。

Celebrating Three Decades of Partnership: Tokyo Foundation Visits Macquarie University
On January 8, 2026, a delegation from the Tokyo Foundation, led by President Mieko Nakabayashi, visited Macquarie University in Sydney, marking an important milestone in a long-standing partnership.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor Anthony Cahalan and Dr. Chavalin Svetanant, director of the Macquarie Japanese Studies (MJS) Centre, along with members of the School of International Studies. The hosts shared insights into the Centre’s ongoing contributions to Japanese language education.
A 30-Year Partnership

The Tokyo Foundation’s partnership with the MJS Centre began in 1995, when an endowment was awarded to Macquarie University under the Nippon Foundation Fund for Japanese Language Education Program (NF-JLEP).
Over the past three decades, the program at Macquarie has supported more than 152 Japanese language teachers and researchers in Japanese studies, contributing to the development of Japanese language education across Australia and beyond.
This enduring collaboration has fostered academic exchange, strengthened teacher training initiatives, and sustained a vibrant network of educators committed to expanding opportunities to study Japanese language and culture. The January visit provided an opportunity to reflect on these achievements and to exchange views on future directions.

Notable NF-JLEP Grant Recipients

During the visit, the delegation met with recipients of the diverse grants offered through NF-JLEP at Macquarie. Attendees included Benjamin Gibb—who visited the Tokyo Foundation last summer to share his experiences with an NF-JLEP-funded project—Teruko Sharif, William Simpson, and Aidan Dunphy-Smith.
Many fellowship recipients are Japanese language teachers at local high schools, and their NF-JLEP-supported activities showcase the innovative and impactful work being undertaken across Sydney and its surroundings. With projects ranging from textbook design to workshops and community outreach, these educators play a vital role in nurturing motivated learners both inside and outside the classroom.
The session offered an insightful look into the passionate teachers shaping the Japanese language scene in Sydney, highlighting their tireless efforts to support and motivate learners.
Looking Ahead
The Tokyo Foundation is deeply grateful for its longstanding partnership with Macquarie University and takes pride in witnessing the impact of this collaboration on Japanese language education in Australia.
As the partnership enters its fourth decade, the Foundation looks forward to continued cooperation in supporting educators, advancing research, and strengthening the foundations of Japanese studies in the region.
